All The Moon’s Phases – A Poem

Words: Michael Callanan
Artwork: Michael Callanan
All the Moon’s phases
Are reflected by the Sun

All of my days
Have blended into one

No delineating petroglyphs
To tell which beast am I
I sit out here in orbit
In a dream in which I die
And if I die within a dream
Then will I fly forever
Or does the end of waking life
Mean dreaming states are neatly severed
Am I dreaming far too often
Am I living far too little
Are my bones lonesome for movement
Sitting stagnant
Growing brittle
Am I something in between
A geriatric and an infant
‘Cause this life seems to have passed
Both in an aeon and an instant
I’ve sat and felt the world turn
From a splash to a tsunami
And the faces flitting past that wave
Both beautiful and ghastly
Some had meaning for a moment
Some meant all
And some meant
Nothing
Or that’s what I try convince myself
(Unreciprocated suffering?)
I’ve been shoving such unwanted thoughts
Under my couch-cushion-abyss
Where the Universe hides car keys
TV remotes and hearts dismissed
But in a moment you may find your bliss
When the world is at its darkest
For only certain times reveal such lights
In a soft, angelic darkness, and…

All the Moon’s phases
Are reflected by the Sun

All of my days
Have blended into one
